I love a good theme because first, themes make it easy to plan treatment activities and second, they are a fun way to engage kids. I especially love themes that allow the use of manipulatives for fine motor and sensory activities. I typically use a theme for an entire month to make planning easier. April is all about flowers, bugs, or gardens. September is perfect for apples. October is of course going to be about Halloween.
My biggest fear when I first switched to teletherapy was not being able to use manipulatives, themes, or worksheets since most of my families did not have a way to print or they did not have the same materials as me. I have a ton of toys and games. Like I have a section in the garage devoted to all my fun things. My husband thinks I am a little crazy sometimes, but I love having options to keep the kids engaged.
So for teletherapy, I had to think outside of the box and come up with a way to make my teletherapy sessions interactive and playful just like they were in the clinic. The sessions also needed to have as little preparation for caregivers to ensure participation. With those requirements and a little research I created some digital activities that I named “Slide Into Fun Digital Activity Cards”. These digital activity cards are created with Google Slides, so they are easy to use with any teletherapy platform and they are very interactive. The digital activity cards provide various themed activities that can be completed during a session and take almost no preparation. You will be able to use materials around the house to complete the activities.
The first theme is all things pirates. Since September 19th was “talk like a pirate day” what better way to celebrate then by completing some pirate themed activities. From writing your pirate name to going on a treasure hunt you will be able to go on a digital pirate adventure from the comfort of your own home.
During the year I will be doing more of these cards with other themes, so make sure you subscribe to my blog to get the latest updates.
