D.I.Y. Spacing Tool

Supplies needed for project.

How many times have you highlighted lines or drawn boxes when working on handwriting skills especially for alignment, sizing, and spacing? I have lost count of how many times that I have done these things or tried to teach a student how to do these things when completing written work. So many times I see that my students are remembering to use these techniques that I have taught them when they are working with me but fail to remember to use them in the classroom. Carryover and generalization of skills can be a big battle especially when the students are rushing to complete the given work. I have created a DIY spacing and alignment tool that I have named the “super spacer.” I named it “super spacer” because it will help students become more efficient with remembering to space between words and in turn, their writing will become super.

First, gather your supplies:

Next, cut the reader strip in half and completely cut out the plastic from the middle.

Finally, tape the cut ends to make an enclosed rectangle.

Using this tool will help your kids improve their handwriting skills especially with alignment, spacing, and size by providing visual and tactile boundaries. Have you made this one or something similar? Let me know in the comments below.
